About Me: After almost a decade in Washington, DC, I recently relocated to the Tampa region.

The “why” behind the move is a bit out of the ordinary, I’ll concede--nope, it’s not the weather, a job, or a gal. Turns out that my toes are sandy because I’m looking for old, moldy newspapers…

OK, here’s the story: Of late I've studied the founding of Tampa's first daily newspaper--The Tampa Daily Times. It was launched by my great-great grandfather in 1893 and it continued for nearly 100 years. Unfortunately, the first 20 years of the paper were lost decades ago--never archived by scholars. As a result, historians have been left often guessing about Tampa’s boom town days (relying on oral history, correspondence, and diaries instead of the newspaper of record). I'm in Tampa to find the missing years--or whatever editions/articles have survived.

The experience of ramping up this campaign has been a blast. Sharing the story of ol' Tampa and the newspaper "scavenger hunt" has proven one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. (Imagine the joy of making new, 80-year old friends, and finding common passions...and you get the picture.)

Moreover, as a one-time, one-semester history major, the challenge and opportunity of rediscovering tales of boom town Tampa's families and their descendants--locating, archiving, and sharing those tales--is one of those callings that makes history real and wakes one up with a bounce, early in the morning. (And isn't that what we all hope for in life, an interest that inspires extraordinary passion?)
